Café Züri Bar

The Niederdorf institution — by some accounts the oldest bar in Zürich — has reopened under three new hands, with coffee added in the mornings and the name officially becoming Café Züri Bar.

Flurina Frei, Joël Eller and Ruben Brändli took over the bar on the corner of Niederdorfstrasse and Preyergasse on 4 September — a move from Kreis 5 into the Altstadt for all three. Eller and Brändli are the new co-owners and also run the cocktail bar Otro on Zwinglistrasse; Frei, the manager, worked previously at the Goldige Guttere. The bar has stood on this corner since 1947, or 1955 depending on which account you believe, which is where its claim to being the city's oldest comes from.

It was a bakery first, and the grating in front of the door is what's left of it. Heritage protection sets what has to stay — the lettering, the windows, that grating — so the changes are fresh plaster, new fittings and new technology rather than a rebuild. The apéro list stays short: salsiz, raw ham, Swiss cheese, pickled vegetables, with a Stange at CHF 5.50 and a pastis at CHF 10. What is new is the morning coffee service, which is why the bar is officially called Café Züri Bar from now on.

It reopened on Friday 4 September 2026. Regular opening hours have not been published yet.
