Schmied

The restaurant in Bern's blacksmiths' guild house reopens on 17 October 2026 as Schmied — restaurant, bar and hall in one, with popular cooking under alpine influence and close to a hundred seats inside and out.

Schmiedenplatz 5 is the house of the Zunftgesellschaft zu Schmieden, a listed building at the quiet end of Bern's old town, a few steps from the Zytglogge. Its ground-floor restaurant — for decades the Schmiedstube — has been shut through a full refurbishment of the property, bridged only by pop-ups, and now returns under a new name and a new team. It bills itself as restaurant, bar and Saal: the team describe a newly renovated, timeless room with just under a hundred seats indoors and out, and the banquet and culture hall in the house belongs to the operation too, so lunch, dinner and larger gatherings all run from the same kitchen.

The cooking is billed as popular cuisine with alpine influences — honest food without chichi, local and fair products, familiar dishes given a creative turn. Beyond that the house is keeping its cards close: the website is still a save-the-date page for 17 October 2026, kitchen and service posts are being hired for the opening, and event enquiries and reservations go by email to restaurant@schmied-bern.ch.
