Geneva's historic Plaza cinema opens a hotel above its auditorium on 4 December – 17 rooms, each one a private mini movie theatre.
The Plaza, opened in 1952 as the first cinema in Switzerland equipped for CinemaScope, sits in Marc J. Saugey's modernist Mont-Blanc Centre a short walk from the lake. Its renovation turns it into Plaza Centre Cinéma, a cultural centre for film and pop culture, and the first part to open its doors to overnight guests is the Cinéma-Hôtel on the first floor, directly above the historic auditorium.
Each of the 17 rooms is built as a small private cinema: deep blue velvet curtains draw back to reveal a projection screen, with warm wood panelling and thick carpet all around. Guests watch from an exclusive film programme curated by the Plaza, and get privileged access to the centre's exhibitions, screenings and masterclasses. Brasserie Europe, in the same building, sends up meal trays for late-night films.
**Best for:** a film-buff weekend in Geneva, without ever leaving the building.
